It would appear that the decision re the ground was only reached after horses had raced on it. At which point Senior jockeys told stewards that ground was unsafe. So if everyone was happy up until then, I guess we can't really blame the organisers?
Assessing going is not really an exact science, walking stick and wellies are not quite the same as a horses hoof traveling at 30 mph with 1/2 ton of weight pushing it down.
As it appears that the senior jockeys quite correctly had a big say in the final decision is it worth on days like today when there was doubt in everyones mind about it being on (as Jeff say a small crowd) paying a senior jockey in to assess the going along with the stewards ?
small crowd & 3 bookies dont know if anyone asked for a refund?? travelling down in the worst weather I can remember, the sect won the wheel barrel of booze... traveling back Flooding & massive pot hole on the A38 (adding an hour to our journey), Buckfastleigh Racecourse looked like you could race Motor Boats on it, top of Dartmoor had 200mm of rain from 12midnight to 8pm this mornimg & its still raining (8 inches in old Money!) so no hosepipe ban for 2 weeks, Expect Larkhill to have good ground, if the Arc has not grounded there
seems that had to run today or else not run a all , as the landowner would not allow it to be rearranged, hopefully this is not the last meeting at this course burt who knows
I suppose, when you think about it, looking at the photo of the declarations for race three, nine of the ten were declared. That does suggest that it walked a lot better than it rode. Presumably connections walked it and, if so, they were happy to declare.
I have to ask the question how can the going be given as "Â no inspection planned, going is still Good" 24 hours before racing and then 8 hours before "few soft places in the dip before the final 2 jumps" and finally 90minutes before "soft" yet abandonded as dangerous ground. ?
Great Trethew are refunding entries for the races that were abandoned

Crazy weather in past 24 hours.

Let us just hope that they have not lost a fortune trying to beat the odds
