There is no real deterrent to administering Lasix in Points. The worst case scenario is a small fine, retrospective disqualification and withholding of prize monies - if you are caught!
The process takes many months and providing connections can get £500 on at Evens 'on the day' they are already financially covered for any eventuality. The disqualified horse can then compete back in it's original grade while the unfortunate promoted runner-up has to carry a penalty or move up a grade even though it hasn't actually 'won'. Connections of the runner-up might eventually get an extra £100 in prize money a year later but if they had backed their horse in perhaps the only race it could ever win they will still be out of pocket. This doesn't seem fair to me.
Owners and Keepers are now faced with a stark choice; either give up altogether because they aren't competing on a level playing field or follow suit and take their chances which will result in a 'free for all' (if it hasn't already).
If somebody is prepared to trash their reputation for £500 they are either:
A Very hard up.
B Didn't have a good reputation to start with.
C Nuts.
D Desperate.
E All of the above
A good mate of mine's Uncle George got banned from the village hall domino drives for cheating. He maybe gained a box of fruit for his dishonesty and became a figure of ridicule.
